Conclusion: Character Formation Is Ultimately About More Than Becoming a “Better Version of Ourselves”
Maturity, self-discipline, and the development of abilities can all bring benefits. Yet the renewal of life described in Scripture involves more than progress in these areas. It means coming to know the Lord more deeply and, through the work of the Holy Spirit, becoming increasingly like Christ, living as those who belong to Him in our thoughts, relationships, and actions (2 Corinthians 3:18).
We fear God because He is worthy of reverence; we trust Him because He is faithful; we are humble because we are creatures and recipients of grace; we obey because He is Lord and we should follow His revealed will; we remain faithful because we have received responsibilities from God and are accountable to Him; we persevere because His grace and promises remain dependable.
As we gradually grow in these qualities of character, we become more willing to accept correction from the truth and more able to love others in our actual relationships. Growth may take place in public ministry, or in a choice that receives little attention yet comes at a cost.
As we seek to understand God’s call, we can also ask: What responsibilities has God already made clear? How am I responding? In these choices and relationships, where do I need to repent, accept correction, and learn?
Particular tasks will end, and our roles and abilities will change. Yet those who have received grace still need to know the Lord, trust Him, and learn love and faithfulness in new circumstances. Character formation continues throughout our lives. Through Christ’s redemption, we also look forward to our lives being brought to fulfilment in Him.
As we continue to grow, we also carry out what has been entrusted to us. This does not mean that we have matured to the point of no longer needing help. In our service, we still need to rely on God, receive counsel, and grow together with other members of Christ’s body. The next chapter will explore further how individuals and the church discern their responsibilities and faithfully live out the mission entrusted to them, with Christ’s presence, the Holy Spirit’s help, and cooperation with one another.
